Did you know there is a basketmaker working in Fowlmere?

I have been making baskets since 2002. In 2005 I completed a two year course leading to a City and Guilds qualification in creative basketry.  I also attended a PTLLS+ course to improve my teaching skills and enable me to teach Saturday Schools for the L.E.A.

In 2009 I was employed by Winter Comfort, a homeless charity in Cambridge.  I was the weaving tutor for the social enterprise Winter Willow where I trained the homeless to weave willow coffins, giving structure to their lives with the possibility of employment and breaking the circle of homelessness. The funding axe fell in April this year and I decided to continue the business on my own. I now make willow coffins and baskets in my studio on The Butts Business Centre, my coffins sell to funeral directors and individuals across the country. I also offer bereaved family members the opportunity to work on their loved one’s coffins, which has proved very popular. My coffins are eco friendly, ideal for woodland burial and cremation.

Workshop Wednesdays is when members of the public come and weave a basket at the studio and learn the ancient craft of willow weaving, booking is advisable.  This class makes a great gift for someone and they will go home with a wonderful woven item.  I also accept commissions and have a range of baskets for the Christmas market. My baskets are made with English willow from the Somerset Levels, and some I grow myself. I also use all kinds of recycled materials. Do come and visit and have a chat and cup of tea or coffee.
